【Product Overview】
This is a dignified antique wooden statue of Tenjin (Sugawara no Michizane), the Japanese Shinto deity of scholarship, learning, and calligraphy. A remarkable feature of this piece is the use of "Gyokugan" (inlaid crystal or glass eyes), a traditional technique that gives the figure a startlingly realistic and piercing gaze. The deity is depicted in formal black court attire (Sokutai), holding a ritual baton (Shaku), and seated on a colorful tatami-style base. The polychrome paint and gold accents show signs of age, adding to its historical character and spiritual presence. It is an auspicious item for academic success and a fine example of Oriental sculpture. Includes a wooden storage box.
